|Soon after Ray Smith built Tropic Star Lodge in 1961, he caught one of the first IGFA World Record marlin on 12 pound line. In the ensuing years, more than 120 World Records have been set at Panama’s internationally known Tropic Star Lodge - more than anyplace else in the world! Forty of those records are still active. |
Black, Blue and Striped Marlin abound in numbers unheard of elsewhere. Pacific Sailfish are there year-round, and from April through July, multiple hookups are the rule rather than the exception. Dolphin are also caught all year long, averaging from 20 to 40 lbs. Inshore, there are amberjack, snapper, grouper, roosterfish, pompano, rainbow runner, mackerel, jack and other species.
Zane Grey Territory
Zane Grey discovered the fishing potential of Panama’s Pinas Bay in the late 1920’s, but the secret was well kept for decades. The famed author searched the world over for Black Marlin before he discovered the great reef. The fabled reef slopes from 120 to 350 feet and supports aquatic life beyond the imagination. Little has changed in the interim years. Now known as Pinas Reef, Zane Grey’s reef remains as it was then, its population of fish undiminished.
Tropic Star Lodge
A paradise sliced from the side of a mountain and surrounded by a jungle rich with wildlife and tropical flora, Tropic Star Lodge is 150 miles South of Panama City. Guests fly into a remote village on the Jaque River via charter plane where the lodge staff meets them. They are then transported to the lodge by a thirty minute boat ride outside the river mouth and along the rugged Pacific coastline of the Darien Jungle into what is truly National Geographic Country. There are no telephones, fax machines or televisions at the lodge. Still, Ray Smith spared nothing when building what is now widely recognized as one of the most luxurious and truly great fishing lodges of the world.
Guests stay in spacious, air-conditioned, twin bedded rooms with private baths and dressing areas. Each room offers a view of the Bay. If guests wish to view the Bay from 150 feet up the mountain side, they can pay a small additional fee to stay in El Palacio (known as the Palace). The Palace can sleep up to six in three bedrooms with a panoramic view of the lodge harbor and surrounding mountains.
Even in the middle of the Darien Jungle, guests have a royal dining experience. Each day starts with a made-to-order breakfast, then lunch aboard the boat (or the veranda for non-fishing guests). Hot fish fingers are served upon return to the dock in the afternoon. After a cool drink at the bar or pool-side, guests can swim and relax in the freshwater pool until 7:00 p.m., then they’re off to the dining room and a five-course candlelight dinner with complimentary wine. Fresh baked pies, cherries jubilee, or baked Alaska round off the end of a perfect day. With such fine service, it’s no surprise Tropic Star Lodge boasts an 80% repeat client business.
According to a writer for Marlin Magazine: "The Lodge itself was a wonder. Secluded by its jungle location, it was the picture of comfortable isolation - feasting on first-class dining and cooled by the lodge’s pool at day’s end, the effect was that of spending a glorious week at a country club."
